University of Detroit High's crack swimming team made shambles of four Catholic league records including the best time recorded this year by a Michigan school boy in the 100 yard butterfly as the Cubs splashed past 11 other rivals in retaining league laurels for a second straight year.
Last Sunday's title tests were witnessed by more than 600 persons at Oakland University's pool as the defending monarchs racked up six firsts in the 11 event championship program.
UD had too much overall balance in easily outscoring the field. The Cubs roared to first place by compiling 93 points. Austin was closest with 45, followed by De La Salle with 30.
Coach Bob Firlik and partisan Cub followers are looking for added glory at the State Class A tests at Michigan State University -- and the young man who can turn the trick is Steve Waszak, the school's 100 yard butterfly expert.
Waszak received a five minute standing ovation following his record breaking time of 54.6 in his specialty last Sunday -- the best time for a prep natator this season. He also copped the 200 yard individual medley with 2:13.9. His showing rates him as a favorite in this event in East Lansing.
The Duffield brothers, Dick and Harry, also played key roles in UD's title winning scheme. Harry set new standards in the 200 yard and 400 yard freestyles with times of 1:55.2 and 4:21.7, respectively. Both efforts surpassed his own marks of 1:56.5 and 4:21.9.
Dick Duffield led the field in the 50 yard freestyle in 23.1, while UD's 200 yard medley relay outfit sped to a new record of 1:54.5. The Cubs foursome was composed of Mark Knapp, Rick Tarnas, Steve Waldrop and Dan Banks.

swim power captured only one event but it was a record smashing performance in the 400 yard freestyle relay, tying its 3:45.6 preliminary time in the finals. Members of the Friar squad were Bob Cleary, Mark Stevens, John Matthews and Bill Snethcamp.
Other individual winners were De La Salle's Steve Boney in the 100 yard freestyle; Dearborn Sacred Heart's John Szuba in the 100 yard backstroke; Bill Burke of Bishop Gallagher in the 100 yard breaststroke and Ted Sliwinski of Notre Dame in diving.
